Remember when the only individuals who cared about the ecosystem were tree huggers and hippies? That’s a thing of the past now, with all people being aware of the problems besetting the planet as well as the shared responsibility we have for turning things around. Unless everyone begins to start living a lot more environmentally friendly we won’t be able to fix the problems of the environment. Each and every family should start making changes that are environmentally friendly and they have to do this soon. Here are some tips that can help you save energy, mainly by making your kitchen more green.

Why don’t we begin with something really easy, changing the actual light bulbs. This will certainly go further than the kitchen, but that is okay. You need to upgrade your incandescent lights along with energy-saver, compact fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs are generally energy-efficient which means electricity consumption is definitely lower, and, even though they cost a bit more to buy, will outlast an incandescent light ten times over. One of the extras is that for every one of these lightbulbs used, it means that approximately ten normal lightbulbs less will end up at a landfill site. Together with different light bulbs, you have to learn to leave the lights off whenever they are not needed. In the kitchen is where you’ll regularly come across members of a family, and often the lights may not be turned off until the last person goes to bed. And it’s not restricted to the kitchen, it happens in other parts of the house also. Try keeping the lights off if you don’t absolutely need them, and notice how much electricity you can save.

As you can see, there are lots of little things that you can do to save energy, and save money, in the kitchen alone. It is reasonably straightforward to live green, of course. Mostly, all it takes is a bit of common sense.

Steps to make Easy But Healthy Quiche with Tofu for Dieters:
  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Let the frozen pie crust thaw to room temperature. Wrap the tofu in paper towels and place a light weight on top to squeeze out the moisture.
  2. Spread out the pie sheet into the pie dish, cover with a sheet of parchment paper and place the pie weights on top. Bake the crust for about 10 minutes in the 200°C oven.
  3. While the crust is baking, cut all of the filling ingredients into 1cm sized pieces and lightly saute. If that's too much work, you don't have to saute them!
  4. Put the drained tofu into a bowl and use a whisk to mix it until smooth.
  5. Add the egg mixture and remaining ingredients into the bowl and stir.
  6. Pour the mixture into the baked pie crust until about 2/3 filled, and smooth it out. Don't put in the filling ingredients first!
  7. Place the filling ingredients on top of the egg mixture. (In the picture, I used 1/2 onion, 1 small eggplant, 1/2 zucchini, and 2 slices of bacon. 1 slice of quiche = 100 calories.)
  8. Cover with the remaining egg mixture and flatten it out. Drop the quiche 2 or 3 times from a distance of about 10 cm to release the air pockets.
